Adapting a more politicised approach to songwriting, a new band image and gaining a new legion of adolescent pop-punkers to their expanding fan-base. I don’t think anyone, including the band could have predicted the overwhelming popularity of the record, which has since spawned a world stadium tour, a live, million selling, album and DVD ( Bullet in a Bible) and a Tony Award nominated rock-opera based on the album. Topping the album charts worldwide and producing 5 mega-hit singles including Boulevard of Broken Dreams, the record of the year at the 2006 Grammy awards. With unstoppable melodies, particularised thematic content and an easily digestible sound, the bands popularity snowballed with every release.įlirting with the mainstream for over decade, it wouldn’t be until 2004’s American Idiot that the band would spill over into the universal pop consciousness. Pioneering the pop/punk genre, their, often comical lyrics, dealing with adolescent subject matter intertwined perfectly with their catchy, melodic punk sound.Įmbracing the MTV generation, their videos were often as memorable as the songs they promoted, and were on hard rotation across the channels. Between 1994 and the start of the new millennium, Green Day were one of the most recognisable acts on the alternative music scene.
